چکیده

In the context of models where the dark energy density rD is a random variable, anthropic selection effects may explain both the ‘‘old’’ cosmological constant problem and the ‘‘time coincidence.’’ We argue that this type of solution to both cosmological constant problems entails a number of definite predictions, which can be checked against upcoming observations. In particular, the anthropic approach predicts that the dark energy equation of state is pD52rD with a very high accuracy, and that the dark energy density is greater than the currently favored value VD'0.7. Another prediction, which may be testable with an improved understanding of galactic properties, is that the conditions for civilizations to emerge arise mostly in galaxies completing their formation at low redshift, z'1. Finally, there is a prediction which is not likely to be tested observationally: our part of the universe is going to recollapse eventually, but it will take more than a trillion years of accelerated expansion before this happens.

Prediction and typicality in multiverse cosmology

In the absence of a fundamental theory that precisely predicts values for observable parameters, anthropic reasoning attempts to constrain probability distributions over those parameters in order to facilitate the extraction of testable predictions. The utility of this approach has been vigorously debated of late, particularly in light of theories that claim we live in a multiverse, where param...

Anthropic predictions: the case of the cosmological constant

Anthropic models can give testable predictions, which can be confirmed or falsified at a specified confidence level. This is illustrated using the successful prediction of the cosmological constant as an example. The history and the nature of the prediction are reviewed. Inclusion of other variable parameters and implications for particle physics are briefly discussed.

Even when completely and consistently formulated, a fundamental theory of physics and cosmological boundary conditions may not give unambiguous and unique predictions for the universe we observe; indeed inflation, string/M theory, and quantum cosmology all arguably suggest that we can observe only one member of an ensemble with diverse properties. How, then, can such theories be tested? It has ...

Anthropic Principle Favors the Holographic Dark Energy

We discuss the anthropic principle when applied to the holographic dark energy. We find that if the amplitude of the density fluctution is variable, the holographic dark energy fares better than the cosmological constant.

Testing anthropic predictions for Λ and the CMB temperature

It has been claimed that the observed magnitude of the vacuum energy density is consistent with the distribution predicted in anthropic models, in which an ensemble of universes is assumed. This calculation is revisited, without making the assumption that the CMB temperature is known, and considering in detail the possibility of a recollapsing universe. New accurate approximations for the growt...
